BIOGRAPHY

David Masgay was born and raised in N.E. Pennsylvania, but currently resides in San Rafael, California. Having grown up an outdoorsman and avid fly fisherman, he developed a true love for the mountains and especially moving water ...his favorite subject matter. David's interest in, and love for photography began early and was cultivated amongst the many art classes taken while in high school and college. Over the next couple of decades, his love for both photography and the outdoors continued to merge.

Photography is David's third professional life. He started out as an athlete after graduating from Penn State University. A long career of being nationally ranked in both the decathlon and the Javelin throw awarded him positions on many national teams. With his degree in Exercise and Sport Science, David spent the next 25 years in the fitness industry in both management and as a master personal trainer ...all the while honing his photography skills. A strong desire, and the need for a change, moved his photography status from 35 year enthusiast to professional.

David practices straight classic landscape photography. He will, if necessary, revisit a shooting site many times in order to get the desired elements for a specific image "in camera." Those elements, such as lighting, color, and form, will definitely increase the drama needed to evoke the desired thoughts and emotions from the viewer. Inspiration for David has come from many classic photographers such as Josef Sudek and Ansel Adams. His work is frequently highlighted by the intentional use of geometric principles, shallow depth of field and the framing of the primary subject matter with soft or shadowed objects and/or naturally cast shadows.  David hopes his images come across with the same honesty and integrity that he has always demonstrated in life.
